Yet Sánchez has continued to defend Spain’s right to make its own foreign-policy decisions rather than simply follow Washington or other powerful allies.
As the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran escalated, Sánchez called for diplomacy and opposed further war. His government also condemned Iranian attacks, making its position clear: Spain should support de-escalation rather than automatically choose a side in another regional conflict.
Sánchez has also remained one of Europe’s strongest voices on Gaza, supporting Palestinian statehood and pushing for stronger European action over Israel’s conduct.
Spain is facing serious challenges, and Sánchez should be judged on how he handles them. But leadership is also about maintaining an independent position when pressure from powerful allies makes doing so difficult.
