C’RIVER DRUG CONTROL COMMITTEE STRENGTHENS ANTI-DRUG CAMPAIGN, INTENSIFIES PREPARATIONS FOR 2026 WORLD DRUG DAY

The Cross River State Drug Control Committee has intensified efforts to combat substance abuse as it continues preparations for the 2026 World Drug Day commemoration, reaffirming its commitment to a drug-free society through strategic planning, stakeholder collaboration, and sustained public sensitization. The committee made this known during a follow-up meeting convened to review progress made in previous engagements and finalize arrangements for activities marking the global observance of World Drug Day on June 26, 2026.

The meeting was held on behalf of the Chairman of the Committee, Her Excellency, Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, Wife of the Governor of Cross River State. The Vice Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey, Esq., who represented the Chairman commended stakeholders for their dedication and continued support in the fight against drug abuse across the state.

During the meeting, Professor Odey noted that the session served as a continuation of earlier productive deliberations and focused on reviewing committee reports, assessing progress made so far, and fine-tuning plans for the forthcoming World Drug Day activities. The Commissioner also reviewed the successful state-level World Drug Day commemoration held on June 5, 2026, at the Ministry of Education in Calabar, describing it as a significant step in raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. He outlined additional activities planned ahead of the June 26 global observance and emphasized the need for broad stakeholder participation to ensure a successful and impactful campaign.

Senator Odey reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance policy on the use of illicit and hard drugs, calling on government agencies, community leaders, educational institutions, youth groups, and other stakeholders to work collectively toward eliminating substance abuse and protecting young people from its devastating consequences.

The meeting featured contributions from representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Commissioners from various ministries, and other key stakeholders who pledged their continued support for the committee’s activities. Appreciation was also extended to NDLEA officials and members responsible for documentation and record-keeping for their commitment and dedication to the committee’s objectives.

Participants agreed on key action plans and strategies to enhance public awareness and community engagement ahead of the June 26 observance. The committee expressed confidence that through sustained collaboration and collective action, Cross River State will continue to make significant progress in the fight against drug abuse, with preparations gathering momentum, the Cross River State Drug Control Committee remains steadfast in its resolve to promote a healthier, safer, and drug-free society for all citizens.
