Sen. Prof. Stephen Odey, Esq., Cross River State Commissioner for Education, on Saturday, September 5, 2026, was conferred with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Onyierikang I of Ebekwarra in Bekwarra Local Government Area. The honour was formally bestowed by His Royal Majesty, Chief Linus Ogbeche Odey, alongside the Bekwarra Traditional Rulers Council, who also decorated him and presented his certificate of recognition.
The colourful ceremony formed part of activities marking the renowned Ipem Ihihe (New Yam Festival), held at the Ukan Roland Idagbo Youth Resource Centre, Abuochiche. In his remarks, Professor Odey expressed profound appreciation for the honour, noting that the conferment further strengthens his bond with the Bekwarra people—transitioning him from being an in-law to a full son of the soil. He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to supporting the growth and development of the area. He was accompanied by supporters and associates from Yache, Gabu, Yala, Ogoja, and beyond.
The event attracted a distinguished gathering of leaders, including Hon. Chief Signor Omang Idiege (Ada Bekwarra II), Hon. Peter A. Akpanke, representing Bekwarra/Obudu/Obanliku Federal Constituency; Hon. Omang C. Omang, representing Bekwarra State Constituency; Chief Peter Ojie; Hon. Egbung Odama, Executive Chairman of Bekwarra LGA, among other notable personalities, underscoring the cultural significance of the occasion.
Earlier, Professor Odey and his entourage paid a courtesy visit to his in-laws’ residence in Abuochiche, where Hon. Philip Ogar and the community accorded him a warm reception. Following the conferment, celebrations continued at the residence of Ada Bekwarra II. The Commissioner described the occasion as a memorable cultural milestone and expressed gratitude to the good people of Bekwarra and all his supporters who accompanied him, while urging continued unity and commitment toward the success of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
