According to an official notice issued from the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Nchimbi formally submitted his resignation letter to President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The resignation will formally take effect on September 4, 2026.
In his public statement, Nchimbi cited constitutional provisions under Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania as the legal grounds for stepping down to clear the path for President Hassan to name a new deputy.
Nchimbi revealed that his departure fulfills a personal commitment made to President Hassan a year prior, on August 27, 2025, where he pledged to support her administration faithfully while promising to step aside whenever she deemed a transition in the Vice Presidency necessary.
“I am fully satisfied, without any doubt, that Her Excellency the President desires change, and thus I have decided to fulfill my promise,” Nchimbi stated. He extended his gratitude to President Hassan, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, and the citizens of Tanzania for the opportunity to serve in the nation’s second-highest executive office.
Nchimbi’s departure concludes a distinguished career spanning over three decades in public office. A former Minister of Home Affairs and Member of Parliament for Songea Town, he also served as Tanzania’s Ambassador to Egypt and Brazil before being appointed CCM Secretary-General in early 2024 and later assuming the Vice Presidency in late 2025. President Hassan is expected to announce his successor following the official effective date of his resignation.
