Stability in neighboring Guinea may be under threat with the news of the purported arrest or hunt for over a thousand supposedly rebels who attempted entering the country from Niger with the hope of ousting the President, who is vacationing in Greece.
This is a dangerous development, amidst the news of fragility with the Secretary of the Presidency, General “Amara Camara” as care taker in the absence of a sick leader who needs proper medical treatment. Although, not officially verified, but one can see a frail “Mamadee Dumbuyah” who is loosing attraction and bodily physique in appearance.
The development comes at a time of heightened tension as many of his perceived opponents have either been imprisoned or killed. Moreover, there have been disappearances of critics as politicians and political parties are banned. He has been governing with iron hands as he exerts grip on power along with his mainly Mandingo tribe men and loyalists. Worst of all, he has been bullying his neighbors, amidst the usurpation of lands in Liberia and Sierra Leone with impunity. Despite diplomatic rapprochement from the President’s of Liberia and Guinea has yielded no results, amidst consternation.
It is alleged that many of the invaders were arrested, while others are on the run. Some of those arrested told investigators that they came purposely to take over the Presidential palace in Conakry. According to one of the arrested rebels, the bulk of them were still in the Fula belt of Labe and Dabola as they embark on the long journey to the Capitol.
Amidst the uncertainty, the caretaker General addressed the nation reaffirming the Unity and total allegiance of the military to the Presidency of General Dumbuyah. They vowed to crush any rebellion from both internal and external sources. He called on the military and civilians to unite in the wake news of the attempted rebellion.
This is a concerning development for neighboring countries, especially, those with the history of rebellion with Liberia as no exception. A destabilization of Guinea is a recipe for chaos in Liberia, mindful of our geopolitical location and connectivity. In short, any conflict in Guinea will have devastating effects on Liberia, a cardinal reason why we must pray and wish for stability in Guinea and the entire sub- region.
