🇪🇹 THE MAN WHO CAME TO DEFINE THE FALL OF AN EMPIREFor more than 40 years, Haile Selassie ruled Ethiopia. To many, he was a symbol of stability and African independence. But by the early 1970s, that image was beginning to crack.The country was struggling. Food shortages, rising prices, protests, and frustration within the military were all building at the same time. People wanted change—and in 1974, they got it.A group of military officers known as the Derg removed Haile Selassie from power, bringing one of Africa’s oldest monarchies to an abrupt end.At first, the Derg ruled as a group. But revolutions rarely stay united for long.One officer steadily outmaneuvered everyone else: Mengistu Haile Mariam.Mengistu wasn’t the man who single-handedly overthrew the emperor. But he became the man who shaped everything that followed.As he tightened his grip on power, Ethiopia changed dramatically. The new government embraced Marxism-Leninism, nationalized industries, redistributed land, and promised to build a more equal society.The promises came with a heavy price.Mengistu’s rule became infamous for the Red Terror—a brutal campaign that targeted suspected opponents of the government. Thousands were imprisoned, tortured, or killed as fear became a tool of political control.His government remained in power until 1991, when rebel forces finally brought the regime down.When people remember the fall of Haile Selassie, Mengistu’s name almost always comes up. Not because he carried out the coup alone, but because he became the face of the revolutionary state that replaced the empire.The emperor’s fall ended an ancient monarchy.Mengistu’s rise began a completely different chapter in Ethiopia’s history.
