ETOO’S SHOCKING SUPPORT FOR BIYA SPARKS OUTRAGE AMONG AFRICANS

I’m heartbroken, and I know many of you are too. Samuel Eto’o, our football hero, the pride of Cameroon and Africa, has thrown his support behind 95-year-old President Paul Biya, a leader many see as a symbol of prolonged French influence in Cameroon. In a recent interview on state TV, Eto’o said he’d vote for Biya because of what Biya “did for his career.” This hurts deeply because we expected better from a legend who inspired us with his strength on the field. Instead, Eto’o, now president of the Cameroon Football Association, is caught in allegations of fraud and mismanagement, yet still backs a leader tied to a colonial system that’s holding Cameroon back. Why would someone with such a questionable record be considered for CAF president? Some say it’s because France pulls the strings in African football, and Eto’o’s loyalty to Biya aligns with their interests. How can we trust our heroes when they seem to bow to foreign powers instead of fighting for Africa’s freedom, like leaders such as Captain Ibrahim Traoré?

This betrayal stings, and it raises big questions: Why is Eto’o afraid to challenge the system? Is he protecting his own future by siding with France’s grip on Cameroon? I never thought our legend would choose personal gain over the dreams of millions of Africans who looked up to him. I urge you to share your thoughts—do you feel let down by Eto’o? Can we still trust our icons to stand for us?
Let’s talk about what this means for our continent’s future and how we can demand better from those we admire.
