Turkish authorities said President Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan via telephone on Friday and told him that Turkey can step in to mediate between the Northeast African nation and the United Arab Emirates.
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are repeatedly accusing the UAE of providing weapons and support to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) a charge also supported by the United Nations.
The UAE continues to deny SAF’s allegations.
During the call with Burhan, Erdogan also discussed strengthening relations between Turkey and Sudan and other regional and global matters.
Erdogan suggested that Turkey step in to broker disputes between Sudan and UAE just as it did recently arbitrating a dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia, Turkey’s presidency said without elaborating.
The presidency also said Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s main principles of protecting Sudan’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and preventing the Northeast African nation from becoming an arena of foreign intervention.
