The Cross River State Drug Control Committee has intensified its efforts to combat substance abuse as it finalizes preparations for the 2026 World Drug Day commemoration, reaffirming its commitment to building a drug-free society through strategic planning, stakeholder collaboration, and sustained public sensitization. This commitment was reiterated during a follow-up meeting of the committee convened to review progress made in previous engagements and finalized arrangements for activities marking the global observance of World Drug Day scheduled for June 26, 2026.
The meeting was held on behalf of the Chairman of the Committee, Her Excellency, Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, Wife of the Governor of Cross River State. Representing the Chairman was the Vice Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Adi Odey, Esq.
Addressing members of the committee and stakeholders, Professor Odey commended their dedication, commitment, and continued support in the collective fight against drug abuse across the state. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in ensuring the success of the forthcoming World Drug Day activities. The Commissioner further explained that, the committee remains resolute in its determination to raise awareness on the dangers of substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles among young people and the general public.
“We are very serious about the commemoration of this year’s World Drug Day. That is why we have continued to emphasize proper planning and coordination of activities leading up to the event. Our gathering today is aimed at ensuring that all preparations are in place ahead of the commencement of activities. This meeting serves as a final review of our plans and strategies to guarantee a successful outing,” he stated.
Professor Odey further charged members of the committee to strengthen synergy and cooperation in order to achieve a successful and impactful World Drug Day celebration. He noted that a united approach remains critical in tackling the growing challenge of substance abuse within communities. The Commissioner also expressed profound appreciation to Her Excellency, Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for her unwavering support, leadership, and commitment to the committee’s activities and the broader campaign against drug abuse in Cross River State.
The committee reaffirmed its determination to sustain advocacy, awareness campaigns, and stakeholder engagement initiatives aimed at preventing drug abuse and fostering a healthier, safer, and more productive society.
