The Cross River State Government has shut down more illegal schools across the 18 LGAs as part of its drive to improve education quality.

Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Sen. Professor Stephen Odey, Esq., said the action targets schools operating without the mandatory Approval to Operate (ATO), noting that 156 illegal schools were closed in 2025, with the exercise continuing in 2026.
“Any school operating without approval will be shut down,” the Commissioner warned.
As part of the ongoing exercise, Peculiar International Nursery & Primary School, Calabar South, was closed for operating illegally. The government remains committed to ensuring quality, standard-compliant education for all children in Cross River State.
