After weeks of intense speculeation, the Rwandan military has confirmed that President Paul Kagame is battling a “serious health crisis” and is under intensive care in Europe.

In a public statement issued Monday evening, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) said Kagame’s condition is “very unstable”, confirming widespread social media reports that had placed the long-serving leader in a critical state, either in Belgium or Germany.
“We confirm that recent reports regarding his condition are accurate… The President’s condition is very unstable at this time, and he remains under intensive medical care by a specialized team,” read the statement.
The military called for unity, urging Rwandans to remain calm and assured the public that the nation’s institutions remain operational.
The last time Kagame was seen in public was during a regional youth engagement forum over two weeks ago. Since then, his absence had raised questions within Rwanda and across the continent.
