THE AKREHA BRIDGE:THE SYMBOL OF HOPE DEFERRED.

YACHE: The Akreha bridge is like the community’s undesirable property. Everyone talks about it and nobody cares about it.

Politicians draft and rehearse sweet melodies every four years, dust it off, and use it to campaign. “We’ll fix it, it’s now in the budget, Funds have been released, Committees will be set ,we promise, we will complete it soon. They pose for photos, shake hands, and make grand speeches during the groundbreaking ceremony.

But after the votes are counted, the bridge is abandoned. Welder return to mend plates, weed sprouts, and locals adapt to the bumpy ride. The sickly scream in pain while crossing, the farmers/traders lose produce, flood issued threats, heavy downpour become a nightmare, motorists hike prices, vehicles get stops tyres, button plate and bumper get damaged.

I had this ugly experience one day, an elderly man shook his head, he said my Son, our leaders are using our bridge as a political ladder. Another young Man added, “Papa said if we don’t vote, maybe they will remember we are here”

AKREHA OKPORKU BRIDGE: where promises go to morgue. Will anyone fix it, or will it remain a monument to broken promises?
