He is a notorious Ugandan warlord and founder of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a terrorist group that has been wreaking havoc in central Africa for decades.
He’s accused of orchestrating a campaign of terror, including murder, rape, and sexual enslavement, displacing millions and abducting thousands of children to serve as soldiers and sex slaves.
Born in 1961 in Odek, Uganda, Kony was once an altar boy who later became a spirit medium and claimed to receive messages from spirits.
He founded the LRA in 1987 with the aim of creating a Christian state based on the Ten Commandments and local Acholi tradition.
Initially, the LRA purported to fight against government oppression, but it eventually turned against its own supporters, who also happen to be from the Acholi ethnic background, his own tribe.
The LRA has been responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 people and the abduction of at least 60,000 children.
Kony’s current whereabouts are unknown, but he’s believed to be hiding in the Central African Republic or Sudan.
The United States government is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of Joseph Kony, the notorious leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
The $5 million reward, equivalent to about UGX 18 billion or KES 642 million, is still active, and individuals with information about Kony’s whereabouts are encouraged to come forward.
Meanwhile, a confirmation of charges hearing is scheduled for September 9, 2025, in The Hague, which will proceed in Kony’s absence if he fails to appear.
