Gabon has declared its plan to exit a major fisheries agreement with the European Union after 18 years, claiming the partnership has created an unequal distribution of advantages and raising worries about the overuse of marine resources.
.
.
The partnership, which began in 2007, permitted EU fishing vessels to operate in Gabon’s territorial waters in return for financial assistance to support Gabon’s fishing industry.
.
.
Nevertheless, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has characterized the arrangement as “loopsided,” contending that European fishing companies have gained substantial profits while Gabon has received minimal benefits in return.
