A Story of Gratitude and Transformation

By Andrew Moses
In a society where opportunities often determine destinies, the power of fairness, transparency, and compassionate leadership cannot be overemphasized. My personal journey from modest beginnings to academic achievement stands as a testimony to the transformative impact of just governance and visionary leadership.
On December 22, 2025, I formally wrote to the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Cross River State, Prof. Stephen Odey, requesting an audience to personally express my heartfelt gratitude for a life-changing opportunity granted to me years earlier. This request is rooted in deep appreciation for a single act of fairness that reshaped not only my life but also the future of my maternal family.
While serving as the Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Stephen Odey conducted a free, fair, and transparent playground employment exercise. Through this credible process, I was offered employment as a non-teaching staff. At the time, this opportunity appeared simple, yet it later became the foundation of my personal growth and academic advancement.
That employment did more than provide financial stability , it restored hope, dignity, and purpose. With renewed determination and improved access to resources, I embarked on my academic journey with a clear vision.
Today, by the grace of God and through that opportunity, I am a graduate. More significantly, I am the first graduate in my maternal family, thereby breaking a long-standing cycle of limited educational attainment.
This achievement is not merely personal; it represents the fulfilment of dreams deferred across generations. It stands as proof that when leaders prioritize fairness and empowerment, they do not just change individual lives they transform families, communities, and society at large.
My request for an audience with Prof. Stephen Odey is not driven by any desire for favour or personal benefit. Rather, it is a humble effort to say thank you to express sincere appreciation for his commitment to equity, integrity, and human development, which continues to inspire countless beneficiaries across Cross River State.
As we reflect on the significance of leadership in shaping destinies, my story serves as a reminder that policies and decisions made in public offices can echo through generations. The impact of that transparent employment exercise continues to resonate in my life, motivating me to contribute meaningfully to society and inspire others to pursue education despite challenges.
I remain profoundly grateful to Prof. Stephen Odey, Honourable Commissioner for Education, Cross River State, for his dedication to education, youth empowerment, and social development. His legacy, as reflected in my journey, is one of hope, opportunity, and lasting transformation.
