The Cross River State Commissioner for Education Sen. Professor Stephen Odey. Esq., was honoured with a massive grand reception in Port Harcourt on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to education and grassroots development.
The reception was organised by the people of Yache, Gabu, Ukelle, Bekwarra and other sister communities from Cross River North residing in Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State and Bayelsa State. The event brought together community leaders, associates and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate what they described as the impactful service of the Education Commissioner.
The colourful ceremony served as a moment of unity and pride for the Cross River North diaspora, as stakeholders from different communities converged to honour a leader whose efforts have continued to inspire progress and development at the grassroots level.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Hon. Chief Boniface Okache; the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Patrick Egbede, Bishop Raphael Aju, of the Lutheran Church, His Royal Highness, Chief Demian Ododo, Chairman Yache Traditional Rulers Council, HRH. Chief Isaac Omaji, Clan Head of Maa, HRH. Chief Innocent Okaiba, Clan Head of Aji/Endichui, Elder Okpoli, Hon John Monday Odo, Director Cross River State Road Maintenance Agency, Hon Idiku David, former Secretary Yala LGA, the Leader of the Yala Legislative Assembly, Hon. Princess Mary Eje; Hon. Christopher Mohie; Hon. Prince George Ogonyi; and Comrade Daniel Ochayi, among other distinguished guests.
Speaking at the reception, Hon. Boniface Okache described Senator Odey as the “golden fish of Yala,” noting that his character and leadership style are worthy of emulation. According to him, the Education Commissioner remains a man whose love for his people is sincere, unwavering and deeply rooted.
Also speaking, Hon. Patrick Egbede commended Odey for what he described as remarkable achievements within a short period in office. He noted that the Commissioner has gone beyond routine administrative duties by championing educational opportunities for students and supporting initiatives that strengthen learning in the state. Hon. Egbede further stated that within less than two years as Commissioner for Education, Professor Odey has contributed significantly to the establishment of the University of Education and Entrepreneurship, describing the feat as a major milestone for the state’s education sector.
In his response, Professor Odey expressed gratitude for the overwhelming show of love and solidarity from members of the Cross River North communities. He urged residents of Cross River North living in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa States to continue supporting the administration of His Excellency, Senator Dr. Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State, whom he said remains committed to transforming the state across all sectors. He also encouraged them to transfer their voter cards to their respective communities in Cross River State so they can actively participate in the democratic process at home.
The Commissioner further commended the Central Planning Committee of the event, led by Engr. Abini F Decency, for their dedication and efforts in successfully organising the reception.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the cutting of a celebratory cake and the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Sen. Professor Stephen Odey and his beloved wife, Mrs. Monica Odey, in recognition of their contributions to community development.
Speaking on behalf of Cross River North communities, Engr. Linus Omama (Maa Clan), Mr. Matthew Okpe and Barr. Ojeka (Gabu), Mr. Boniface Omang (Bekwarra), Mr. Maurice Agaji (YCDA, Uyo), Mr. Monday Okama (YCDA, Port Harcourt) and Mr. Ajoma (Yala), all commended the Commissioner for his tireless efforts toward grassroots development and his commitment to the progress of Cross River North and the state.
