Col. Dangiwa Umar: Became governor at 36, detaïned for openly opposing Babangida over June 12 election

  • Born September 21, 1949.
  • 1970s–1980s: Served in various military postings, gaining recognition for professionalism.
  • August 1985 (Age 36): Appointed Military Governor of Kaduna State after General Ibrahim Babangida overthrew General Muhammadu Buhari.
  • Governed Kaduna until June 1988, implementing administrative reforms and promoting discipline.
  • 1993: He was Colonel and Commander of the Armoured Corps Center and School. He openly opposed the annulment of the 12 June 1993 presidential election, and started looking for support within the army to installing the elected president M.K.O. Abiola, acclaimed winner of the election.
  • In October 1994, he was detained on suspicion of conspiracy, but was not charged. After being released he resigned his commission.
  • Became a respected public intellectual and political commentator known for his outspoken criticism of bad governance, corruption, and military interference in politics.
  • He continues to advocate for democracy, justice, and national unity.
